Wartburger Brauhaus, Wartburg
Wartburger Hof, in the German-style town of Wartburg, is
situated
in the KZN Midlands 30km outside Pietermaritzburg, the
capital of KwaZulu-Natal. Founded in 1890 by Lutheran
missionaries, the architectural and interior design of
Wartburger Hof gives the impression of a typical Bavarian
country hotel. Here is found the WARTBURGER BREW HOUSE,
where Siggi Schadle, a born and bred Bavarian, together
with Swiss-born Max Haller, brew beer according to the
German purity law, learnt from the German specialists who
trained them.
The small brewery, the plant of which was imported from
Germany, is situated in the cellar of the hotel adjoining
the pub. The brewery lives up to its name iwth only 200
litres of 'pure' beer brewed per week. All the ingredients
are imported from Germany with only the water being from
the local area.
The larter part of the production is Wartburg
Brahuaus Helles, a beer between a Lager and a
Pilsner with 4% alcohol.
